    Environmental bisimulations for probabilistic higher-order languages

    Environmental bisimulations for probabilistic higher-order languages are studied. In contrastwith applicative bisimulations, environmental bisimulations are known to be more robust and do not require sophisticated techniques such as Howe's in the proofs of congruence. As representative calculi, call-by-name and call-by-value λ-calculus, and a (call-by-value) λ-calculus extended with references (i.e., a store) are considered. In each case, full abstraction results are derived for probabilistic environmental similarity and bisimilarity with respect to contextual preorder and contextual equivalence, respectively. Some possible enhancements of the (bi)simulations, as "up-to techniques," are also presented. Probabilities force a number of modifications to the definition of environmental bisimulations in nonprobabilistic languages. Some of thesemodifications are specific to probabilities, others may be seen as general refinements of environmental bisimulations, applicable also to non-probabilistic languages.     On the relative expressiveness of higher-order session processes

    By integrating constructs from the λ-calculus and the π-calculus, in higher-order process calculi exchanged values may contain processes. This paper studies the relative expressiveness of HOπ, the higher-order π-calculus in which communications are governed by session types. Our main discovery is that HO, a subcalculus of HOπ which lacks name-passing and recursion, can serve as a new core calculus for session-typed higher-order concurrency. By exploring a new bisimulation for HO, we show that HO can encode HOπ fully abstractly (up to typed contextual equivalence) more precisely and efficiently than the first-order session π-calculus (π). Overall, under session types, HOπ, HO, and π are equally expressive; however, HOπ and HO are more tightly related than HOπ and π

    Extracting Proofs from Tabled Proof Search

    We consider the problem of model checking specifications involving co-inductive definitions such as are available for bisimulation. A proof search approach to model checking with such specifications often involves state exploration. We consider four different tabling strategies that can minimize such exploration significantly. In general, tabling involves storing previously proved subgoals and reusing (instead of reproving) them in proof search. In the case of co-inductive proof search, tables allow a limited form of loop checking, which is often necessary for, say, checking bisimulation of non-terminating processes. We enhance the notion of tabled proof search by allowing a limited deduction from tabled entries when performing table lookup. The main problem with this enhanced tabling method is that it is generally unsound when co-inductive definitions are involved and when tabled entries contain unproved entries. We design a proof system with tables and show that by managing tabled entries carefully, one would still be able to obtain a sound proof system. That is, we show how one can extract a post-fixed point from a tabled proof for a co-inductive goal. We then apply this idea to the technique of bisimulation ''up-to'' commonly used in process algebra

    Social report framing: Evidence from a major Italian bank

    This study aims to analyse the development of a social report in a major Italian bank from its formation in 2007 to 2012.The Italian banking sector plays an important role in the Italian economy.Several Italian frameworks for social reports have been published and used by Italian companies.However, an important framework for social reports in Italy is the GRI.The paper aims to answer the following research questions: 1) what international guidelines have been used by the Bank in its social reports, during the period considered? 2) What have been the structural changes in the social report over time? The aim of these questions is to analyse the structure of the Bank’s six social reports.The paper relies on documentary analysis, applied to six social reports. It is based on G3 Guidelines and Performance Indicators (PIs).The paper finds that in the six-year period several changes in social reports are highlighted.We conclude that the Bank has engaged in a process of continuous improvement in the information content of the social report, including recently indicating that a PI is only partially disclosed if not in accordance with the guidelines

    Causality and replication in concurrent processes

    The replication operator was introduced by Milner for obtaining a simplified description of recursive processes. The standard interleaving semantics denotes the replication of a process P, written !P, a shorthand for its unbound parallel composition, operationally equivalent to the process P | P | …, with P repeated as many times as needed. Albeit the replication mechanism has become increasingly popular, investigations on its causal semantics has been scarce. In fact, the correspondence between replication and unbound parallelism makes it difficult to recover basic properties usually associated with these semantics, such as the so-called concurrency diamond. In this paper we consider the interleaving semantics for the operator proposed by Sangiorgi and Walker, and we show how to refine it in order to capture causality. Furthermore, we prove it coincident with the standard causal semantics for recursive process studied in the literature, for processes defined by means of constant invocations

    Modular coinduction up-to for higher-order languages via first-order transition systems

    The bisimulation proof method can be enhanced by employing ‘bisimulations up-to’ techniques. A comprehensive theory of such enhancements has been developed for first-order (i.e., CCS-like) labelled transition systems (LTSs) and bisimilarity, based on abstract fixed-point theory and compatible functions. We transport this theory onto languages whose bisimilarity and LTS go beyond those of first-order models. The approach consists in exhibiting fully abstract translations of the more sophisticated LTSs and bisimilarities onto the first-order ones. This allows us to reuse directly the large corpus of up-to techniques that are available on first-order LTSs. The only ingredient that has to be manually supplied is the compatibility of basic up-to techniques that are specific to the new languages.
